The Learning Commons (TLC)

“The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.” – Proverbs 18:15

Dear Heritage families:

We are pleased to offer The Learning Commons (TLC) as a ministry to all our students. Our desire is that TLC will be a regular and enjoyable part of every student’s experience at Heritage.

Our TLC has a dedicated classroom for remediation and enrichment. We will encourage and assist those who struggle but also strive to generate excitement in all our students and cultivate a school-wide love of learning. Our goal is to increase achievement levels in the elementary school through skill-building and other strategies.

By fueling interest in learning more about God’s world, it is our prayer that students will echo the Psalmist:

“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it; the world, and all who live in it.” – Psalm 24:1

Blessings in Christ,

The Learning Commons (TLC)

The Learning Commons (TLC) provides both enrichment and encouragement while promoting a culture of learning school-wide. It is the hub of strategic and comprehensive learning instruction and enhancement.

TLC expands curricular offerings for our students and also provides enrichment on a broader level.  HCA students will have the opportunity to visit the TLC periodically with their class.

Our inclusive model utilizes ongoing collaboration with classroom teachers and TLC staff.  An extensive classroom intervention plan has been developed and students who require additional assistance will receive individualized help from the staff in the classroom or The Learning Commons.

Resource opportunities for remediation and enrichment are offered as teacher schedules permit. Recommendations for some students may involve individual outside intervention. TLC groups cannot take the place of intensive one-on-one remediation for students with more significant needs.

Reading Program

The morning program focuses on students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. It includes:

  • Regular reading assessments of all students
  • Reading skills reinforcement

TLC staff works within the classroom or with individual students in The Learning Commons.  The program is designed to provide parents with resources to help their student.

Students are assigned to groups that may vary throughout the year according to emerging needs. This gives students an opportunity to receive targeted help with concepts that are giving them difficulty.

The Great Book Club

Third grade students have the option to join The Great Book Club during lunch. The club is offered several times during the school year.

Enrichment Program

In the afternoon, the program provides enrichment for students in 5th and 6th grades. The students will work on skill development in critical thinking and problem solving, as well as developing listening, interviewing, analysis and library skills.

The first part of the afternoon is set aside for enrichment group projects, which are coordinated with classroom teachers. Focus areas may be history, science or reading.  These focus areas will be offered at two different levels.  The second part of the afternoon is reserved for remediation and reinforcement of classroom skills.

Math Club

An after school math club option is available severaly times during the school year for interested students in 4th through 6th grades.  Math club offers enrichment and challenge to its members.
